Getting to grips with Gripsure production

7th December 2016

Gripsure’s apprentice Aaron joined the team in September and has made a great start. Aaron has cracked on with getting to grips with the production basics and is progressing well with his apprenticeship in performing manufacturing.

After my induction, getting my uniform and receiving my health and safety training, it was time to start work. I met the rest of the team at Gripsure before joining my production colleagues and getting stuck in with learning the basics of shaking down. Over the past few months I have be trained on gunning the boards to insert the non slip infills, stoning the boards with the non slip aggregate, putting orders together and banding them ready to go out for delivery. In the up and coming months I will be learning how to cut the timber boards as well as quality management.

The production team have been a great laugh and very supportive which has made me more confident and helped me to develop my newly learned skills in manufacturing non slip decking.

Gripsure have made me feel really welcome and a highlight for me so far has been the team building day where I learnt more about Gripsure’s history and plans for the future, as well as spending the afternoon clay pigeon shooting. I look forward to progressing further with the company.

Gripsure shortlisted for major manufacturing award

21st October 2016

Gripsure has been shortlisted for the SME Manufacturing Company of the Year prize in the Insider Made in the South West awards.

The award is for SME manufacturing companies based in the South West that have demonstrated excellence and made an outstanding contribution to the manufacturing sector in the region in the last 12 months.

Over the last year, Gripsure has secured its products into two of the UK’s biggest DIY retailers, Homebase and Jewson. This double success marks a step change for the firm and a significant opportunity to grow. The Homebase deal enabled the Cornish firm to enter the mainstream consumer market, while the expansion into Jewson is supporting Gripsure’s growing sales to trade customers.

Gripsure, now the UK’s leading manufacturer of non slip decking, continues to maintain a reputation for innovation. Earlier this year the company launched its first decking tiles, bringing its total number of anti slip timber decking products to seven.

Taking place at a black tie dinner in Bristol on 2nd November, the prestigious awards showcase manufacturing from across the South West and give local companies the opportunity to celebrate their ongoing commitment to world-class quality and excellence. The winners of this year’s awards will automatically go through to the grand final Made in the UK, where the best of British manufacturing will be celebrated.

Gripsure Managing Director Mike Nicholson said: “We are really proud to have been shortlisted for this prestigious award, which positions us as a key player in the South West’s manufacturing sector. This is a very exciting period for Gripsure: the last year has seen us get our product into two national retail outlets and we have expanded our range, all while maintaining our commitment to quality and excellent customer service. Being recognised in this way is a great boost for our team who are working really hard to help Gripsure grow and succeed.”

The other businesses shortlisted for the SME Manufacturing Company of the Year award are Future Advanced Manufacture, Cubik Innovation, Blue Badge Company, Woodwarm Stoves and Marshfield Bakery.

The shortlist was decided by a judging panel chaired by South West Business Insider editor Graham Southorn. The judges were Simon Howes, managing director, SWMAS; John Rubidge, head of innovation in services at the Department for International Trade South West; Nick Hurst, executive chairman, Artemis Optical; and Jim Davison, region director, South of England, EFF.

Graham Southorn said: “It was really difficult to decide on the shortlist this year, as the standard of entries was so high. We had an enjoyable debate on the judging day, and many congratulations to all those shortlisted.”

Gripsure team away day

14th October 2016

Gripsure’s annual team away day was this year held at Knightor Winery, one of the regions up and coming English vineyards. The morning started with a review of the highlights of 2015-16, along with welcoming new members of the team. Top of the agenda, as always, was the health and safety of all employees. Gripsure has an amazing safety record, with no lost time accidents or incidents since the company was formed, but that is no reason for complacency. So this year saw the introduction of Safety Sam, their new health and safety mascot who will be the force for taking the company safety culture to the highest level. The morning then moved on to discuss future plans in sales, marketing, production and research & development.

In the afternoon, with work completed the team headed outdoors for a bit of clay pigeon shooting. There was a bit of healthy competition as pairs took it in turns to face the flying targets. It was a close call but the sharp shooter of the afternoon was Jed who took home the trophy for most shots on target.

Gripsure anti slip decking now available at Homebase

18th July 2016

Gripsure decking is now available in 100 Homebase stores across the UK as well as on

Gripsure, the UK’s leading anti-slip decking company, produces decking made from FSC certified Scandinavian redwood. These non-slip decking boards feature two aggregate inserts, which ensure they don’t get slippery, even in wet or icy weather. Thanks to its innovative design, the decking has achieved an excellent slip resistant rating in safety tests.

With customers all over the country and overseas, including Jamie Oliver, the National Trust and Alton Towers, Gripsure produces a range of anti-slip timber decking boards. The company’s expansion over the past 10 years has mainly been the result of growing its commercial client base.

Gripsure Managing Director Mike Nicholson said: “Having our products available at Homebase is a fantastic opportunity for Gripsure. While our commercial customers continue to grow, both in the UK and overseas, this represents an opportunity for us to expand into the mainstream consumer market.

“The decking market has really taken off over the last 30 years, but people are now more aware of the dangers of surface water, algae, fallen leaves and ice, all of which can make decking lethally slippery. Getting our product into Homebase will encourage more people to see the potential of anti-slip decking to offer both style and safety.”

Gripsure expands into the merchant market with a new accounts manager

13th June 2016

Gripsure has appointed its first national accounts manager. Kevin Moloney, who brings 30 years’ experience in the timber industry and will focus on growing the firm’s sales to merchants.

Based in Cheshire, Kevin will increase Gripsure’s sales through national and independent timber and builders merchants across the UK. Under his management, Builder Center in Wrexham was one of the first branches to stock timber decking in the early 1990s. Kevin said:

“I am proud to have been an early adopter of decking, having seen its potential to take off in the UK. I am now keen to be part of the latest development – anti-slip decking. Gripsure is a fast growing company with a very focused and upbeat team of people. Having worked on both sides of the industry – in trade sales and in retail – I have been very impressed by Gripsure’s commitment to its customers. My intention is to help them grow their sales quickly and take up every opportunity.”

Ross celebrates a decade of decking innovation

1st June 2016

Production Director Ross Crouch is celebrating his 10-year anniversary with Gripsure. Ross joined when the company was just starting to develop a niche in anti slip decking. Then a new graduate, he was taken on by the company founder Mike Nicholson as the firm’s first full-time member of staff.

Ross oversees the planning and production of all of Gripsure’s products, from its base in Cornwall. As well as being responsible for health and safety and the firm’s FSC certification, he plays a key role in designing and developing new products. Recently Ross has built new machinery for two innovative new products, Gripsure Aquadeck and Gripsure decking tiles.

Since Ross joined the firm, Gripsure has moved from pumping hand-mixed resin into decking boards to running an efficient and productive manufacturing system. Working with SWMAS and the Gripsure management team, Ross oversaw the firm’s step change to a modern factory environment to enable large-scale production.

Speaking of his first ten years with Gripsure, Ross said: “I have a very active and hands-on role and it’s extremely varied – one day I’ll be writing risk assessments and the next I’m in the workshop designing a new product. Gripsure is a great company to work for, it’s a really good environment to be in with a fantastic team of people.

“We’ve come so far over the last decade, growing from a local business to an international company. The decking market has grown since we first started out and people are now more aware of the safety benefits of anti slip decking. We’re in a great positon globally and are growing our export market, so the future looks really exciting.”

No stumble in the Jungle for architects

25th May 2016

Gripsure welcomed a group of architects to Cornwall to demonstrate how our non slip products are manufactured and show how they have enhanced a world famous visitor attraction. The day started with a tour of The Lost Gardens of Heligan, where our guests had the opportunity to walk on Gripsure non slip decking through the Jungle area. The fantastic weather on the day meant that the exotic gardens were looking their best.

After the Heligan tour, a lunch was followed by a presentation of Gripsure’s product range, showing the variety of innovative non slip solutions and examples of suitable applications. We then gave our guests a tour of Gripsure’s HQ to show the manufacturing process in the production unit.

We have had positive comments from the architects, who reported that it was really informative and “much better than an office based CPD event” and “it was excellent to show your product in a dramatic context such as Heligan”. Many thanks to everyone who attended and for your feedback. If you are an architect, timber merchant or building contractor, we would be delighted to welcome you to Gripsure. Please contact Kevin on to arrange your visit.

Gripsure shortlisted for Business Awards 2015

5th October 2015

We are very pleased to announce that Gripsure have been shortlisted for Small Business Of The Year as part of The Western Morning News Business Awards 2015. We have had a great financial year with a steep growth path, tripling our workforce, exporting overseas and celebrating ten years of anti slip decking innovation. It has been a busy year! Gripsure is a small business, but it is achieving great things.

Keeping you on your feet since 2005

3rd July 2015

Gripsure is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the invention of its first non-slip decking board. Gripsure, which was born out of Cornwall Specialist Surfacing Company, created its first coated timber board Boardwalk HD for use on the South West Coast Path.

The creation enabled a small local contractor to transform itself into a major national manufacturing company with global ambitions.

Now based in Bugle, Gripsure is now the UK’s leading non-slip decking manufacturer with customers all over the country, including the National Trust, Eden Project and Holiday Inn. Gripsure also exports to France, Sweden and Ireland and is working with UK Trade and Investment to establish export to Australia.

In 2005, Cornwall Specialist Surfacing Company was known locally for providing a range of outdoor surfaces, mainly for schools. When Cornwall Council approached them with a brief to produce a non-slip timber surface for sections of the South West Coast path around Mevagissy, the team came up with a timber decking board with an aggregate surface.

The firm started to receive more requests for its non-slip decking and, after researching the market, recognised the potential to develop this side of the business. Eventually, non-slip decking became the sole focus and in 2010, a new company, Gripsure, was formed to focus on the future growth for the product.

Now employing 10 people, 2014 was the firm’s record year with a 30 per cent increase in turnover. The company now produces a range of six different decking boards, all with high non-slip ratings, for commercial clients and homeowners. The boards are made and distributed from the firm’s Bugle premises.

Gripsure Managing Director Mike Nicholson said: “When we created our first timber board, I would never have imagined that 10 years on we would become the UK’s leading non-slip decking company.

“Thousands of people have now walked on our decking, in visitor attractions hotels and spas, as well as at schools, universities and hospitals.

“The future looks really exciting – there is a growing market for decking that stays safe, even in wet weather. We have a passionate and talented team here, including a number of local graduates, who are all working to maintain Gripsure’s national position and to establish the firm globally.”

Lea Chupin Gripsure Intern Spring 2015

25th June 2015

I have had a great two months at Gripsure, it was my first work placement as part of my international trade studies and it was a great place to start.

Gripsure are based in Bugle, Cornwall and are leading suppliers of anti-slip timber decking in Great Britain. Manufacturing a large range of quality products as well as providing a bespoke infill and cutting service. I was very pleased when Mike Nicholson accepted my request for an internship, as I was very keen to visit the beautiful Cornwall and improve my English as well as develop my business knowledge.

I gained a lot of experience at Gripsure specifically within the anti slip decking market. I was happy to of had the opportunity to work for the company, and help Gripsure to increase their knowledge of the French market. I did a lot of desk research into the French market to find out what is already available in France, more specifically how to market to architects. I then produced a marketing plan based on my findings which I presented to Karine Davies from the UK Trade Invest.

During my time at Gripsure I was able to collaborate with Debbie who is the marketing assistant, to help translate and improve the French website and leaflet content. I was given the responsibility of contacting architects, and companies in France to introduce them to Gripsure’s products. I was also trusted in contacting clients directly. I was also asked to get some feedback on what people thought of Gripsure. I was happy to help the head of the company with business enquires by translating quotes, and contacting people requesting more information. There was never a dull moment in the busy office with new tasks for me to do all the time.

I got the chance to work with the nice team at Gripsure, and to improve my English. I am more confident in myself and in my abilities to work in international trade. I got some good feedback about my work and a good letter of recommendation. Next year Gripsure will exhibiting at the international show “Carrefour du Bois “/ “International Timber” in Nantes France, and Gripsure have asked me to come and present products for the company.
